Consultancy Division is the extension wing of National Coir Research & Management Institute. The major activities of the division include providing Government advisory, bring together experts from the Government, industry, academic institutions, other related organisations to evolve, develop and supply quality industrial consultancies, study and report on sector analysis, conduct socio economic studies, conduct market research for new products, imparting skill development training programs for workers & conducting seminars, workshops and certificate programs.
Brand Building for Kerala Coir
NCRMI implemented for brand building programme for Coir and Coir products from Kerala along with its quality assessment and acquired the brand name and logo - “Kerala Coir _ Golden Yarn of Gods Own Country” under Trade mark certification (No.1560984, 1545286, 1545285 & 1560895). Coir Trade Mark are obtained for fibre, ropes, strings, nets, cords, twines, carpets, mats, mattings, rugs and geo textiles.
Development of Digital Coir Runnage Meter
Digital Coir Runnage Meter is an accurate, easy-to-use, low maintenance testing instrument used to determine the runnage of coir yarn in less than a minute. It is a table top, portable and easy to handle instrument dedicated to measure runnage with higher level of accuracy. The runnage of coir yarn displayed in a character LCD display mounted over the instrument is pre-programmed using microcontroller equipped with an optical encoder

Coir Kerala International Exhibition
Coir Kerala Exhibition, the biggest international expo on coir and allied natural fibres had been professionally organized annually at EMS Stadium, Alappuzha, since its first version during 2011. NCRMI acted as the co-ordinating agency for 9 editions of this magnanimous event wherein 140 odd international buyers from 70 countries participated in each episode along with 100 odd domestic stakeholders. Coir Kerala exhibition centre is encompassed with the most modern International pavilion accommodating theme based stalls showcasing the coir product and its applications with unique facilities for one-to-one discussions. International & National Level Seminars, Buyer-Seller Meets, Road Shows, and Domestic Exhibitions are the standalone features of the event. This expo has been marked as the most sought after event in the calendar of International exhibitions across the globe.
Coir Kerala 2011
Coir Kerala, an International event on Coir & other natural fibre products was held for the first time in the year 2011 – “Coir Kerala 2011”. The event was held on 4th to 9th February 2011 at EMS stadium, Alleppey for promoting coir and its allied products in the National and International arena.
The huge success of Coir Kerala 2011 has served the way for the continuous conduct of Coir Kerala series in the following years. The Coir Kerala International exhibition conducted by Government of Kerala in association with Government of India is coordinated by National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI). The event has a series of International and National Seminars & Buyer–Seller Meets & one to one interaction system etc., as part of Coir Kerala. The presentations for seminars were convened by National delegates and International delegates from different countries. International Buyers from all over the globe participated in the events. The exporters and producers of Coir products from in and around Alleppey also participated as exhibitors by occupying the stalls in the pavilion and thus making the event a grand success. The main aim of the event was at exploring and expanding the International market for Coir Products from Kerala and to encourage use of latest machinery and technology in the coir production sector.
Coir Kerala 2012
The Government of Kerala in association with Department of Commerce, Govt. of India organized the annual international event titled “COIR KERALA 2012” at Alappuzha during 4th - 7th February 2012 at EMS Stadium. 74 International buyers from 28 countries along with 62 National buyers & 153 Exhibitors participated in COIR KERALA 2012. The event had participation from countries such as South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya, Croatia, Spain, Ireland, Bulgaria and France. There were also participants from South American countries like Colombia.
Coir Kerala 2013
“COIR KERALA 2013” was hosted from 1st to 6th February 2013 at EMS stadium, Alleppey. 127 International buyers from 30 countries along with 24 National buyers & 122 Exhibitors participated in COIR KERALA 2013. The event had participation from new countries apart from as of last years. This year there were participants from countries such as Venezuela, Israel, Panama, Spain, Netherlands etc., showing the entry of Coir Kerala into new markets which were not much explored.
Coir Kerala 2014
“COIR KERALA 2014” was hosted from 1st to 5th February 2014 at EMS stadium, Alleppey. 147 International buyers from 39 countries along with 20 National buyers & 134 Exhibitors participated in COIR KERALA 2014. The growing number of participants and increase in number of countries of participation also shows the trending of Coir Kerala International exhibition. This year’s event had participation from new countries such as Switzerland, Romania, Macedonia, Japan etc.
Coir Kerala 2015
COIR KERALA 2015” was hosted from 1st to 5th February 2015 at EMS stadium, Alleppey. 142 International buyers from 44 countries along with 10 National buyers & 163 Exhibitors participated in COIR KERALA 2015. The Coir Kerala event with its increasing popularity in the domestic and International markets was self explanatory with the statistics. The event had participation from countries such as Czech Republic, Equador, Finland, Turkey, Slovakia etc. registering for the first time. The participation from newer countries showed the reach of Coir Kerala.The inauguration of Coir Kerala 2015 was conducted by Chief Minister of Kerala followed by Minsters, MP’s and MLA’s from Kerala State.Designer stalls were developed and displayed by every exhibitor making their stalls spectacular and eye catching to attarct the Foreign delegates.The delegates were happy with the Coir Kerala exhibition, the widest variety of Coir products which included not only traditional mats and mattings. The vent showcased technological advancement in the field of Coir Industry. There were diversified products for the first time exhibited in this International event.
The Coir Kerala 2015 was a successful event taking in account of the exhibitors who are the producers or sellers and the buyers. The Coir Kerala has marked its presence in the International exhibition calendar with its prominence and its uniqueness.
Coir Kerala 2016
The obtrusive success of the previous chapters of Coir Kerala had tremendous pressure on Coir Kerala 2016 to make it much larger for COIR KERALA 2016. Coir Kerala 2016 being the 6th edition was a huge success by outdating the charisma of its earlier versions. It brought together all domains of coir industry from across the world and provided a platform to comprehensively evaluate the current global market trends, innovations in applications of coir, opportunities and challenges, Research and Development, new technologies and forecast the future of the natural fibre industry. The event made its mark with potential International buyers flying in from all around the world. It also had maximum participation from the exhibitors who wanted an alliance with these International buyers. There were also exhibitors from Jute board and Carpet export promotion council along with coir cooperative societies from Kerala to support this largest event on natural fiber.
The event also showcased high class National, International Seminars and in-depth panel discussions featuring eminent personalities, industry experts, entrepreneurs, policy makers, researchers, academicians and thinkers from various spheres of the global natural fibre community from different countries.
Coir Kerala 2017
NCRMI was the coordinating agency for Coir Kerala 2017 in asscoiation with KSCC for Coir Development Department, GoK. The Coir Kerala Exhibiton was conducted from 5th to 9th October 2017. NCRMI along with FICCI has sourced over 150 delegartes from 45 odd countries all around the globe.
Peformance Assessment of the Mechanized Spinning Coir Co-operatives Units
NCRMI implemented the performance assessment of the mechanized spinning coir co-operaitves at Kannur project area. The operation and processess involved in the production centre were evaluated. A detailed report on the performance parameters existed in the coir co-operaitve societies along with recommendations on its expansion scope submitted to Government.
Price Fixation of different varieties of coir yarn on a pan Kerala basis
NCRMI performed a comprehensive scientific analysis of the operation parameters for yarn manufacturing for fixing the price of different variants of coir yarn under all coir project areas. Govt. vide G.O. (Rt.) No. 12/2019/ID dtd.05.01.2019 constituted a technical committee with policy makers of Coir Directorate, Coirfed, Coir PSU’s for this price fixation endeavour. This initiative encompassed all the techno-commercial and relevant social factors prevalent in the coir yarn manufacturing process.
Systemic productivity cum cost analytics study of Automatic Spinning Machine
Kerala Government as part of the flagship programme desired to operate 1000 Automatic Spinning Machines (ASM) in 100 odd coir co-op’s across the State. To finalize of operation policy for ASM’s, NCRMI implemented the system productivity cum cost analytics study across the selected co-op’s by the Coir Department for ASM installation. Entire technical cum socio economic parameters were included in this venture. A high level committee formed by Coir Directorate with representation from Coirfed, Coir PSU’s, Union leaders and project monitoring unit. Productivity linked remuneration pattern and its impact were focussed in this study and report submitted to Government.
Relative production analysis of differently manufactured brands of automatic spinning machine
NCRMI carried out the relative production analysis of different branded automatic spinning machine (ASM’s) manufactured by M/s KSCMMC, M/s Sukumar Engineers and M/s 2M Engineers. NCRMI assessed and evaluated the performance cum working parameters based on the assimilation of primary data from the procured machines of the above brands. The analysis report with recommendation submitted to Govt.
Output and Quality Assessment of various manufacturing process in yarn making
NCRMI had been entrusted by Apex Body for Coir (ABC) for analysing the productivity of different yarn manufacturing processes. The evaluation study was conducted by NCRMI along with the support of a committee consisting of members from Coir Directorate, Coirfed and Coir PSU’s. In this initiative, output parameters of different techniques (hand, e-ratt and ASM) for making the major varieties of yarn were scientifically been evaluated based on actual observed values. Quality parameters were adjudged for finalizing the output a yarn making technique.
Green Campus
NCRMI campus is situated at Kudapanakunnu coming under Thiruvananthapuram Corporation area. 7 acres campus is embellished with the beauty of lush green environment inhabited by exotic varieties of flora and fauna. This green protocol adopted campus is having well maintained fresh water pond with all the in-house demonstrations projects. Spacious administrative block with state-of-the-art lab cum workshop complex are housed inside the campus.
Knowledge and Development Centres – Training Facilities
NCRMI houses a seminar hall with a seating capacity of 80 persons, two lecture halls with capacity for 50 persons each, and a digitised board room with interactive technology. These training facilities are fully air conditioned and furnished using coir and coir products that enable acoustic management and temperature control. The centres has a high quality projector, Wi-Fi facility and class room teaching amenities such as whiteboard, cordless and wired microphones. NCRMI has well-furnished air-conditioned hostel facility that can accommodate 50 people along with faculty rooms. There is recreation room with indoor and other amenities. A canteen facility can accommodate 100 persons at a time.
NCRMI is the nodal agency for conducting training programs for stake holders of Coir industry in Kerala. The training programs are broadly classified as Collaborated training programs, Management training programs, skilled training programs and external training programs.
Collaborated Training Programs
The National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) partnered with the International Labour Organization (ILO) to conduct the "Improve Your Business" (IYB) training program and Training of Trainers (TOT) program. Also, associated with UNIDO – KENYA for providing skill oriented training to official of Kenya. These initiatives targeted key functionaries of Coir Cooperative Societies, aiming to equip participants with essential business skills and practical management knowledge to navigate the coir industry effectively. The TOT program specifically focused on developing the management and financial skills of coir cooperative society secretaries. This enhanced their capabilities to manage these societies as successful business entities.
This collaborative project aimed to strengthen the operational and financial performance of coir cooperative societies by empowering their key personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge.
Management Training Programs
Apart from skill development training programs, NCRMI conducts management training for stake holders of Coir Department.
Management training programs highly serves to improve employee skills and knowledge and enable them to develop within the organization, which goes a long way in raising their morals and help mould their attitudes and behaviour, whereby they tend to be increasingly cooperative and loyal to the organization, they serve.
NCRMI conducts periodical training programs for updating the staff with the recent revisions/modification in the sector. NCRMI also conducts orientation programs for the new joiner’s of Coir sector.
- Management Training Program - 2022
The National Coir Research & Management Institute actively fosters learning and development within the coir industry. In 2022, NCRMI organized two four-day "Orientation Training" programs for officials of the Coir Development Department. These programs included classroom sessions on management, coir products and applications, coir geotextiles, and coir scheme implementation, followed by an industrial visit to coir PSUs and cooperatives in Alappuzha. Additionally, NCRMI conducted a "Managerial and Departmental Training" program for its own staff from November 25th to 29th. This program featured sessions on new applications for coir geotextiles, untapped potential of coir pith, diversification in the coir industry, and recent R&D advancements. These initiatives highlight NCRMI's commitment to equipping both its own staff and Coir Department officials with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the evolving coir industry landscape.
- Management Training Program - 2013
NCRMI provided training programs for Coir Department staff in 2013. Senior officials participated in a "Management refresher training for Modern Management Techniques" from October 7th to 11th, while coir inspectors (JCIs and SCIs) underwent a five-day "Managerial and Departmental Training" program from November 19th to 23rd. Both programs aimed to equip participants with relevant skills and knowledge, encompassing managerial, technical, and departmental topics. The inspector training even included a concluding industrial visit to Pollachi. These initiatives highlight NCRMI's commitment to the professional development of Coir Department personnel.NCRMI actively invests in its staff and the broader coir industry through training programs. In 2015, a four-day "Managerial & Departmental Training" program conducted for its own staff and a three-day "Orientation Training" program for officials of the Coir Development Department. Both programs included classroom sessions and field visits to Pollachi, while Coir Department officials visited coir PSUs in Alappuzha). These initiatives demonstrate NCRMI's commitment to continuous learning and professional development, ultimately contributing to the industry's growth and success.
- Management Training Program - 2010
Demonstrating its commitment to professional development within the coir industry, the National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) conducted a series of training programs for Coir Department personnel in 2010. These included a management refresher program on modern techniques for senior officials, a five-day residential program focused on management skills for coir inspectors, and a program on managerial skill development for office staff, complete with a field visit to coir units. This comprehensive approach aimed to equip Coir Department staff with the necessary tools and knowledge to excel in their respective roles.
Institutional Training Programs
- Coir Geotextile School
NCRMI conducted nine training batches for 324 MGNREGA workers, overseers, and assistant engineers, focusing on practical implementation rather than theory. This program was conducted in association with COIRFED and targeted field-level personnel involved in projects like MGNREGS.
- Training for Agricultural Department Engineers
A four-day program equipped engineers with hands-on expertise in applying coir geotextiles, including coir geocells and mulches, for use in agricultural projects.
Skilled Training Programs
The National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) has been the designated agency for skill upgradation training in Kerala's coir industry since 2003. NCRMI's comprehensive training programs, delivered through its ten project offices, specifically target women workers in co-operative societies. These programs equip workers with the necessary skills to adapt to the modernization and mechanization initiatives of the government's 2nd Reorganization Package, ensuring social protection for the traditional workforce. NCRMI's dedication to this cause is evident in the successful training of over 6,000 women, empowering them with improved job prospects, financial security, and social status.
- Frame Mats
The National Coir Research & Management Institute offers training programs to upskill women workers in coir cooperative societies for commercially producing frame mats. These 45-day programs cover all aspects of frame mat manufacturing, including different types of mats (corridor, sinnet, round, mesh), design and color incorporation, and factory-style production practices. NCRMI collaborates with design institutes like NIFT and IFTK to develop new and attractive designs. This initiative has empowered 50 women workers through five training batches, and the program is ongoing.
- Automatic Spinning Machine training
As part of the 2nd Reorganization Package, GoK devised a proactive strategy for mechanization of spinning process and transformed the yarn manufacturing coir co-operatives into spinning factories by operating 10/20 Automatic Spinning Machines (ASM’s) in single production unit. NCRMI being the nodal agency for conducting training programs for coir sector under GoK uplifted the women coir workers of these spinning factories engaged in ASM based yarn manufacturing.NCRMI instilled the ASM technology to the women coir workers by engaging to a single machine by providing on-the-job-training for 30 workings days in real time manufacturing shop floor. NCRMI followed professionally framed training syllabi for diligently imparting training to women coir workers partaking with stake holders like KSCC and COIRFED to ensure coir yarn meets the industrial requirement. NCRMI has already conducted 167 batches of training covering 1640 women workers from 120 odd coir co-operative spinning factories.
- E-ratt Training
Electronic ratt commonly known as “e-ratt” is one of the novel finding for the spinning sector in Coir Industry. It is a very simple instrument working on 12-40V DC motor which can be used to produce coir yarn of runnage 140-180. The production capacity of eratt is 13- 18 Kg of Coir yarn in an 8 hr Shift. The women workers of Coir industry has welcomed this equipment with extended hands as it is easy to use and can be installed anywhere and everywhere in a minimum space for working and then can be dismantled after use.NCRMI has already conducted 54 batches of e ratt training during the period of 2018-23 for women workers of various coir cooperative societies throughout Kerala under all the 10 project offices. The eratt training attracted newer generation to Coir industry due to its ease of work and lesser drudgery and of the option of it being used at own house premises. NCRMI has trained around 1080 women workers of various Coir Cooperative Societies selected by respective coir project offices that are approved by Coir Development Department.
- Master Training
The National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) actively invests in training its staff to meet the growing demand for coir processing and product training across the state. NCRMI conducts various programs, including:Skill enhancement of master trainers (2022)
This program reviewed and enhanced the skills of 14 existing master trainers, evaluating their past training programs based on feedback and discussions. This information will be used to improve the effectiveness of future training curriculums.
Master training program on coir yarn spinning using e-ratt (2021)
This program trained newly recruited trainers (who completed a one-year diploma course in advanced coir technology) on operating and working with electronic ratts, preparing them to train workers in coir cooperative societies.
Master training for new trainers (2018)This 10-day program equipped 14 trainees (who completed a certificate course from Coir Board) with the theoretical and technical knowledge, along with management skills, to train and guide new workers in coir cooperative societies on spinning Vaikom coir using electronic ratts.
- Souvenirs & Curios
NCRMI has conducted Training program on Coir Souvenirs and Entrepreneurship program for women. The training program was held for the period of one month from 28th September to 26th October 2013. The training program was residential and international trainer Mrs. Verena Schazlein, Germany was the consultant chief trainer for the program.
- Geo Textiles
NCRMI has conducted training program in production of Coir Geotextiles during the period 2004 as per the direction of Coir Department, Govt. of Kerala. The training programs were conducted for the workers of coir cooperative societies on Anugraha loom Developed by Coir Board that was installed at Coir Park, Perumon, Kollam under NCRMI. NCRMI has successfully completed the more than 10 batches of training on weaving of coir geotextiles covering 244 beneficiaries.
- Extinct Varieties
NCRMI collaborated with the Kerala State Coir Corporation (KSCC) to revive production of forgotten coir products. The training program focused on creating fiber mats, mourzouk carpets, and coir fenders. Held at the KSCC premises, the program trained 214 workers from coir co-operative societies in Alappuzha. Trainees were selected from an approved list provided by the Coir Project Office, Alappuzha. This initiative aims to revitalize these traditional coir products and potentially create new economic opportunities.
International Seminars – Binder less Boards
The National Coir Research and Management Institute (NCRMI) hosted a one-day international seminar on the development of binderless boards using coconut husk and coir pith. This informative event targeted stakeholders in the coir industry, including industry experts, exporters, research scholars, and dignitaries from various fields. Held on March 12, 2019, at the NCRMI campus in Trivandrum, the seminar was inaugurated by esteemed guests: Hon'ble Minister for Finance & Coir Dr. Thomas Isaac, Sri Venugopal IAS, Secretary (Coir), and Sri Padmakumar IAS, Director of Coir Development.
The seminar delved deep into the technological and engineering aspects of binderless board production, featuring presentations by renowned experts Dr. Jan Van Dam, Wageningen University & Research, Netherlands and Ir. Edwin Keijsers & Dr. Swathy Vurrakula, Wageningen University. Additionally, delegates from renowned institutions like NIIST, CUSAT, CCRI, and the Planning Board, along with prominent coir industry exporters, participated as presenters and panel members, enriching the discussions with their diverse perspectives.
This international seminar by NCRMI demonstrates its commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration within the coir industry, exploring sustainable and eco-friendly production methods for a brighter future.
National Seminars
- Application of Coir Geotextiles at Muthukulam Block Panchayat
The National Coir Research and Management Institute (NCRMI) actively advocated for the use of coir geotextiles by organizing informative seminars. One such event, held at Muthukulam Block Panchayat, celebrated the block's successful application of 150,000 sq. m. of coir geotextiles in various engineering projects under the NREGP scheme. This achievement earned them the distinction of being named "Coir Bhoovastra Block" by the government. The seminar, featuring renowned experts and attracting over 150 participants, including decision-makers and engineers from diverse government agencies and coir industry representatives, aimed to showcase the potential of coir geotextiles.
- Recognizing the challenge of coir fibre scarcity
NCRMI's commitment extended beyond celebrating success stories. Recognizing the challenge of coir fiber scarcity, the institute hosted another workshop in Alleppey. This event brought together industry stakeholders, including exporters, small-scale producers, and government officials, to discuss solutions. The workshop, inaugurated by the Hon'ble Minister for Cooperation and Coir, provided a platform to evaluate imported fiber from the Philippines, facilitating valuable feedback and fostering collaboration to address the scarcity issue. These proactive seminars exemplified NCRMI's dedication to promoting the coir industry through knowledge sharing and collaboration.
- Uses & Established Applications of Coir Geo-textiles
In collaboration with the Coir Development Department and Mararikulam North Grama Panchayat, the National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) organized a two-day national seminar on "Uses & Established Applications of Coir Geotextiles" on February 4th and 5th, 2017. The primary objective of the event was to delve into the practical applications of coir geotextiles and facilitate knowledge sharing among stakeholders.Experts conducted technical sessions on the diverse applications of coir geotextiles, such as road construction, riverbank protection, and agriculture. These sessions were attended by key decision-makers, including government officials, engineers, and industry representatives. Participants had the opportunity to visit a demonstration plot showcasing the real-world applications of coir geotextiles.The second day witnessed an interactive session involving over 1200 Panchayat Raj Institution leaders, coir officials, and stakeholders. The focus was on coir geotextile technology and its potential within the MNREG Scheme.
Buyer Seller Meets
NCRMI, in partnership with Coir PSUs (COIRFED, Kerala State Coir Corporation, and FOMIL) and the Coir Development Department, has organized multiple Buyer Seller Meets across different locations in India. The primary objective of these events is to promote coir and its associated products both in domestic and international markets. These meetings serve as a platform to attract and involve new traders and entrepreneurs, encouraging their active participation in the coir industry.
The Buyer Seller Meets have successfully drawn international participants from various regions, fostering business connections between them and domestic producers and traders. The initiative plays a crucial role in providing a conducive environment for coir producers and potential buyers to engage, explore business opportunities, and establish meaningful partnerships. These events contributed significantly to the growth and promotion of the coir industry.
The participation of high-ranking officials from the Coir Industry, including government representatives and Public Sector Undertakings, added significant significance and credibility to such events. Trade representatives, buyers, and various organizations appreciated the proactive initiatives initiated by the Government of Kerala.

Additionally, the institute has successfully organized Exhibitors Meets, designed to draw exhibitors and traders to participate in the prestigious Coir Kerala Expo. This initiative serves to showcase the diverse array of coir products, foster collaborations, and bolster the industry's overall growth.
Inaugurated by notable figures such as Sri Padmakumar IAS and Sri C P Radhakrishnan, the Exhibitors Meets in Kolkata and Pollachi have garnered attention and participation from key stakeholders. Furthermore, Trade Meets in New Delhi and Mumbai have played a vital role in promoting industry advancements, with the active participation of eminent figures like Hon’ble Minister Adoor Prakash and Secretary Rani George IAS. Exhibition Participation
NCRMI actively engages in various exhibitions and fairs, showcasing its innovative contributions to the coir industry. From December Fest 2016 to Kerala Kaumudi Fest 2018 and Vishukani 2018, NCRMI's stalls feature informative displays on its activities and coir department initiatives. At the "Keraleeyam" event organized by the Government of Kerala, the National Coir Research and Management Institute (NCRMI) played an active role in showcasing the vibrant culture and development of the state on the international stage. The event, spanning more than 40 venues, included seminars, activities, exhibitions, fairs, festivals, and shows.During the Keraleeyam exhibition at the Central Stadium from November 1-7, 2023, NCRMI featured a visually captivating designer stall. This stall creatively depicted the rich history of the coir industry, tracing its evolution from 1850 to the present day. The exhibition showcased the very first coir mat alongside various coir yarn types manufactured across the state.

- Workshop for Senior Officials on Promoting Coir Products in Domestic Markets (May 15-16, 2023)
This workshop focused on utilizing online platforms and social media to expand domestic market reach for coir products. The training program was extended to officers handling marketing/sales/it related officials of PSU’s. The working of online selling platforms/social media etc., were discussed and the second module of the training program as suggested for interested participants.
- One-day Workshop for Officials of Directorate of Coir Development (February 27, 2022)
This workshop, held in collaboration with coir public sectors, aimed to equip officials with knowledge of coir geotextiles for direct marketing with local self-government departments (LSGD).
- Workshop on Coir Geotextile Marketing (October 7, 2021)
This workshop focused on initiating coir geotextile marketing from the base level, leveraging coir project office staff. Officers from 10 project offices participated in the workshop.
- 2nd Reorganization of Coir Sector in Kerala (April 4-5, 2018)
This workshop assessed the progress, challenges, and potential solutions related to the coir industry's reorganization movement. It encouraged self-assessment by project offices and PSU officials, and included participation from 89 key figures within the industry.
- Workshop on Restructuring of Coir Industry (November 24-26, 2017)
As a key part of the 2nd reorganization movement, this workshop addressed critical issues across various sectors, seeking solutions with participation from the then Minister for Finance and Coir Dr. T M Thomas Isaac. Discussions covered the spinning sector, cost analysis, coir cooperative restructuring, and geotextile marketing implementation.
- Research Agenda on Coir (September 29, 2008)
This workshop laid the groundwork for future research initiatives, with recommendations actively being implemented. Outcome of the workshop was submitted to Government for intervention and implementation. - Master Trainers Workshop

Coir Kerala International Exhibition
Coir Kerala Exhibition, the biggest international expo on coir and allied natural fibres had been professionally organized annually at EMS Stadium, Alappuzha, since its first version during 2011. NCRMI acted as the co-ordinating agency for 9 editions of this magnanimous event wherein 140 odd international buyers from 70 countries participated in each episode along with 100 odd domestic stakeholders. Coir Kerala exhibition centre is encompassed with the most modern International pavilion accommodating theme based stalls showcasing the coir product and its applications with unique facilities for one-to-one discussions. International & National Level Seminars, Buyer-Seller Meets, Road Shows, and Domestic Exhibitions are the standalone features of the event. This expo has been marked as the most sought after event in the calendar of International exhibitions across the globe.
Coir Kerala 2011
Coir Kerala, an International event on Coir & other natural fibre products was held for the first time in the year 2011 – “Coir Kerala 2011”. The event was held on 4th to 9th February 2011 at EMS stadium, Alleppey for promoting coir and its allied products in the National and International arena.
The huge success of Coir Kerala 2011 has served the way for the continuous conduct of Coir Kerala series in the following years. The Coir Kerala International exhibition conducted by Government of Kerala in association with Government of India is coordinated by National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI). The event has a series of International and National Seminars & Buyer–Seller Meets & one to one interaction system etc., as part of Coir Kerala. The presentations for seminars were convened by National delegates and International delegates from different countries. International Buyers from all over the globe participated in the events. The exporters and producers of Coir products from in and around Alleppey also participated as exhibitors by occupying the stalls in the pavilion and thus making the event a grand success. The main aim of the event was at exploring and expanding the International market for Coir Products from Kerala and to encourage use of latest machinery and technology in the coir production sector.

The Government of Kerala in association with Department of Commerce, Govt. of India organized the annual international event titled “COIR KERALA 2012” at Alappuzha during 4th - 7th February 2012 at EMS Stadium. 74 International buyers from 28 countries along with 62 National buyers & 153 Exhibitors participated in COIR KERALA 2012. The event had participation from countries such as South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya, Croatia, Spain, Ireland, Bulgaria and France. There were also participants from South American countries like Colombia.
Coir Kerala 2013
“COIR KERALA 2013” was hosted from 1st to 6th February 2013 at EMS stadium, Alleppey. 127 International buyers from 30 countries along with 24 National buyers & 122 Exhibitors participated in COIR KERALA 2013. The event had participation from new countries apart from as of last years. This year there were participants from countries such as Venezuela, Israel, Panama, Spain, Netherlands etc., showing the entry of Coir Kerala into new markets which were not much explored.

“COIR KERALA 2014” was hosted from 1st to 5th February 2014 at EMS stadium, Alleppey. 147 International buyers from 39 countries along with 20 National buyers & 134 Exhibitors participated in COIR KERALA 2014. The growing number of participants and increase in number of countries of participation also shows the trending of Coir Kerala International exhibition. This year’s event had participation from new countries such as Switzerland, Romania, Macedonia, Japan etc.

COIR KERALA 2015” was hosted from 1st to 5th February 2015 at EMS stadium, Alleppey. 142 International buyers from 44 countries along with 10 National buyers & 163 Exhibitors participated in COIR KERALA 2015. The Coir Kerala event with its increasing popularity in the domestic and International markets was self explanatory with the statistics. The event had participation from countries such as Czech Republic, Equador, Finland, Turkey, Slovakia etc. registering for the first time. The participation from newer countries showed the reach of Coir Kerala.The inauguration of Coir Kerala 2015 was conducted by Chief Minister of Kerala followed by Minsters, MP’s and MLA’s from Kerala State.Designer stalls were developed and displayed by every exhibitor making their stalls spectacular and eye catching to attarct the Foreign delegates.The delegates were happy with the Coir Kerala exhibition, the widest variety of Coir products which included not only traditional mats and mattings. The vent showcased technological advancement in the field of Coir Industry. There were diversified products for the first time exhibited in this International event.
The Coir Kerala 2015 was a successful event taking in account of the exhibitors who are the producers or sellers and the buyers. The Coir Kerala has marked its presence in the International exhibition calendar with its prominence and its uniqueness.

The obtrusive success of the previous chapters of Coir Kerala had tremendous pressure on Coir Kerala 2016 to make it much larger for COIR KERALA 2016. Coir Kerala 2016 being the 6th edition was a huge success by outdating the charisma of its earlier versions. It brought together all domains of coir industry from across the world and provided a platform to comprehensively evaluate the current global market trends, innovations in applications of coir, opportunities and challenges, Research and Development, new technologies and forecast the future of the natural fibre industry. The event made its mark with potential International buyers flying in from all around the world. It also had maximum participation from the exhibitors who wanted an alliance with these International buyers. There were also exhibitors from Jute board and Carpet export promotion council along with coir cooperative societies from Kerala to support this largest event on natural fiber.

NCRMI was the coordinating agency for Coir Kerala 2017 in asscoiation with KSCC for Coir Development Department, GoK. The Coir Kerala Exhibiton was conducted from 5th to 9th October 2017. NCRMI along with FICCI has sourced over 150 delegartes from 45 odd countries all around the globe.
Peformance Assessment of the Mechanized Spinning Coir Co-operatives Units
NCRMI implemented the performance assessment of the mechanized spinning coir co-operaitves at Kannur project area. The operation and processess involved in the production centre were evaluated. A detailed report on the performance parameters existed in the coir co-operaitve societies along with recommendations on its expansion scope submitted to Government.
Price Fixation of different varieties of coir yarn on a pan Kerala basis
NCRMI performed a comprehensive scientific analysis of the operation parameters for yarn manufacturing for fixing the price of different variants of coir yarn under all coir project areas. Govt. vide G.O. (Rt.) No. 12/2019/ID dtd.05.01.2019 constituted a technical committee with policy makers of Coir Directorate, Coirfed, Coir PSU’s for this price fixation endeavour. This initiative encompassed all the techno-commercial and relevant social factors prevalent in the coir yarn manufacturing process.
Systemic productivity cum cost analytics study of Automatic Spinning Machine
Kerala Government as part of the flagship programme desired to operate 1000 Automatic Spinning Machines (ASM) in 100 odd coir co-op’s across the State. To finalize of operation policy for ASM’s, NCRMI implemented the system productivity cum cost analytics study across the selected co-op’s by the Coir Department for ASM installation. Entire technical cum socio economic parameters were included in this venture. A high level committee formed by Coir Directorate with representation from Coirfed, Coir PSU’s, Union leaders and project monitoring unit. Productivity linked remuneration pattern and its impact were focussed in this study and report submitted to Government.
Relative production analysis of differently manufactured brands of automatic spinning machine
NCRMI carried out the relative production analysis of different branded automatic spinning machine (ASM’s) manufactured by M/s KSCMMC, M/s Sukumar Engineers and M/s 2M Engineers. NCRMI assessed and evaluated the performance cum working parameters based on the assimilation of primary data from the procured machines of the above brands. The analysis report with recommendation submitted to Govt.
Output and Quality Assessment of various manufacturing process in yarn making
NCRMI had been entrusted by Apex Body for Coir (ABC) for analysing the productivity of different yarn manufacturing processes. The evaluation study was conducted by NCRMI along with the support of a committee consisting of members from Coir Directorate, Coirfed and Coir PSU’s. In this initiative, output parameters of different techniques (hand, e-ratt and ASM) for making the major varieties of yarn were scientifically been evaluated based on actual observed values. Quality parameters were adjudged for finalizing the output a yarn making technique.
Green Campus
NCRMI campus is situated at Kudapanakunnu coming under Thiruvananthapuram Corporation area. 7 acres campus is embellished with the beauty of lush green environment inhabited by exotic varieties of flora and fauna. This green protocol adopted campus is having well maintained fresh water pond with all the in-house demonstrations projects. Spacious administrative block with state-of-the-art lab cum workshop complex are housed inside the campus.
Knowledge and Development Centres – Training Facilities
NCRMI houses a seminar hall with a seating capacity of 80 persons, two lecture halls with capacity for 50 persons each, and a digitised board room with interactive technology. These training facilities are fully air conditioned and furnished using coir and coir products that enable acoustic management and temperature control. The centres has a high quality projector, Wi-Fi facility and class room teaching amenities such as whiteboard, cordless and wired microphones. NCRMI has well-furnished air-conditioned hostel facility that can accommodate 50 people along with faculty rooms. There is recreation room with indoor and other amenities. A canteen facility can accommodate 100 persons at a time.
NCRMI is the nodal agency for conducting training programs for stake holders of Coir industry in Kerala. The training programs are broadly classified as Collaborated training programs, Management training programs, skilled training programs and external training programs.
Collaborated Training Programs
The National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) partnered with the International Labour Organization (ILO) to conduct the "Improve Your Business" (IYB) training program and Training of Trainers (TOT) program. Also, associated with UNIDO – KENYA for providing skill oriented training to official of Kenya. These initiatives targeted key functionaries of Coir Cooperative Societies, aiming to equip participants with essential business skills and practical management knowledge to navigate the coir industry effectively. The TOT program specifically focused on developing the management and financial skills of coir cooperative society secretaries. This enhanced their capabilities to manage these societies as successful business entities.
This collaborative project aimed to strengthen the operational and financial performance of coir cooperative societies by empowering their key personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge.
Management Training Programs
Apart from skill development training programs, NCRMI conducts management training for stake holders of Coir Department.
Management training programs highly serves to improve employee skills and knowledge and enable them to develop within the organization, which goes a long way in raising their morals and help mould their attitudes and behaviour, whereby they tend to be increasingly cooperative and loyal to the organization, they serve.
NCRMI conducts periodical training programs for updating the staff with the recent revisions/modification in the sector. NCRMI also conducts orientation programs for the new joiner’s of Coir sector.
- Management Training Program - 2022
The National Coir Research & Management Institute actively fosters learning and development within the coir industry. In 2022, NCRMI organized two four-day "Orientation Training" programs for officials of the Coir Development Department. These programs included classroom sessions on management, coir products and applications, coir geotextiles, and coir scheme implementation, followed by an industrial visit to coir PSUs and cooperatives in Alappuzha. Additionally, NCRMI conducted a "Managerial and Departmental Training" program for its own staff from November 25th to 29th. This program featured sessions on new applications for coir geotextiles, untapped potential of coir pith, diversification in the coir industry, and recent R&D advancements. These initiatives highlight NCRMI's commitment to equipping both its own staff and Coir Department officials with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the evolving coir industry landscape.
- Management Training Program - 2013
NCRMI provided training programs for Coir Department staff in 2013. Senior officials participated in a "Management refresher training for Modern Management Techniques" from October 7th to 11th, while coir inspectors (JCIs and SCIs) underwent a five-day "Managerial and Departmental Training" program from November 19th to 23rd. Both programs aimed to equip participants with relevant skills and knowledge, encompassing managerial, technical, and departmental topics. The inspector training even included a concluding industrial visit to Pollachi. These initiatives highlight NCRMI's commitment to the professional development of Coir Department personnel.NCRMI actively invests in its staff and the broader coir industry through training programs. - Management Training Program - 2010
Demonstrating its commitment to professional development within the coir industry, the National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) conducted a series of training programs for Coir Department personnel in 2010. These included a management refresher program on modern techniques for senior officials, a five-day residential program focused on management skills for coir inspectors, and a program on managerial skill development for office staff, complete with a field visit to coir units. This comprehensive approach aimed to equip Coir Department staff with the necessary tools and knowledge to excel in their respective roles.
Institutional Training Programs
- Coir Geotextile School
NCRMI conducted nine training batches for 324 MGNREGA workers, overseers, and assistant engineers, focusing on practical implementation rather than theory. This program was conducted in association with COIRFED and targeted field-level personnel involved in projects like MGNREGS.
- Training for Agricultural Department Engineers
A four-day program equipped engineers with hands-on expertise in applying coir geotextiles, including coir geocells and mulches, for use in agricultural projects.
Skilled Training Programs
The National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) has been the designated agency for skill upgradation training in Kerala's coir industry since 2003. NCRMI's comprehensive training programs, delivered through its ten project offices, specifically target women workers in co-operative societies. These programs equip workers with the necessary skills to adapt to the modernization and mechanization initiatives of the government's 2nd Reorganization Package, ensuring social protection for the traditional workforce. NCRMI's dedication to this cause is evident in the successful training of over 6,000 women, empowering them with improved job prospects, financial security, and social status.
- Frame Mats
The National Coir Research & Management Institute offers training programs to upskill women workers in coir cooperative societies for commercially producing frame mats. These 45-day programs cover all aspects of frame mat manufacturing, including different types of mats (corridor, sinnet, round, mesh), design and color incorporation, and factory-style production practices. NCRMI collaborates with design institutes like NIFT and IFTK to develop new and attractive designs. This initiative has empowered 50 women workers through five training batches, and the program is ongoing.
- Automatic Spinning Machine training
As part of the 2nd Reorganization Package, GoK devised a proactive strategy for mechanization of spinning process and transformed the yarn manufacturing coir co-operatives into spinning factories by operating 10/20 Automatic Spinning Machines (ASM’s) in single production unit. NCRMI being the nodal agency for conducting training programs for coir sector under GoK uplifted the women coir workers of these spinning factories engaged in ASM based yarn manufacturing.NCRMI instilled the ASM technology to the women coir workers by engaging to a single machine by providing on-the-job-training for 30 workings days in real time manufacturing shop floor. NCRMI followed professionally framed training syllabi for diligently imparting training to women coir workers partaking with stake holders like KSCC and COIRFED to ensure coir yarn meets the industrial requirement. NCRMI has already conducted 167 batches of training covering 1640 women workers from 120 odd coir co-operative spinning factories.
- E-ratt Training
Electronic ratt commonly known as “e-ratt” is one of the novel finding for the spinning sector in Coir Industry. It is a very simple instrument working on 12-40V DC motor which can be used to produce coir yarn of runnage 140-180. The production capacity of eratt is 13- 18 Kg of Coir yarn in an 8 hr Shift. The women workers of Coir industry has welcomed this equipment with extended hands as it is easy to use and can be installed anywhere and everywhere in a minimum space for working and then can be dismantled after use.NCRMI has already conducted 54 batches of e ratt training during the period of 2018-23 for women workers of various coir cooperative societies throughout Kerala under all the 10 project offices. The eratt training attracted newer generation to Coir industry due to its ease of work and lesser drudgery and of the option of it being used at own house premises. NCRMI has trained around 1080 women workers of various Coir Cooperative Societies selected by respective coir project offices that are approved by Coir Development Department.

The National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) actively invests in training its staff to meet the growing demand for coir processing and product training across the state. NCRMI conducts various programs, including:Skill enhancement of master trainers (2022)
This program reviewed and enhanced the skills of 14 existing master trainers, evaluating their past training programs based on feedback and discussions. This information will be used to improve the effectiveness of future training curriculums.
Master training program on coir yarn spinning using e-ratt (2021)
This program trained newly recruited trainers (who completed a one-year diploma course in advanced coir technology) on operating and working with electronic ratts, preparing them to train workers in coir cooperative societies.
Master training for new trainers (2018)This 10-day program equipped 14 trainees (who completed a certificate course from Coir Board) with the theoretical and technical knowledge, along with management skills, to train and guide new workers in coir cooperative societies on spinning Vaikom coir using electronic ratts.
- Souvenirs & Curios
NCRMI has conducted Training program on Coir Souvenirs and Entrepreneurship program for women. The training program was held for the period of one month from 28th September to 26th October 2013. The training program was residential and international trainer Mrs. Verena Schazlein, Germany was the consultant chief trainer for the program.
- Geo Textiles
NCRMI has conducted training program in production of Coir Geotextiles during the period 2004 as per the direction of Coir Department, Govt. of Kerala. The training programs were conducted for the workers of coir cooperative societies on Anugraha loom Developed by Coir Board that was installed at Coir Park, Perumon, Kollam under NCRMI. NCRMI has successfully completed the more than 10 batches of training on weaving of coir geotextiles covering 244 beneficiaries.
- Extinct Varieties
NCRMI collaborated with the Kerala State Coir Corporation (KSCC) to revive production of forgotten coir products. The training program focused on creating fiber mats, mourzouk carpets, and coir fenders. Held at the KSCC premises, the program trained 214 workers from coir co-operative societies in Alappuzha. Trainees were selected from an approved list provided by the Coir Project Office, Alappuzha. This initiative aims to revitalize these traditional coir products and potentially create new economic opportunities.
International Seminars – Binder less Boards
The National Coir Research and Management Institute (NCRMI) hosted a one-day international seminar on the development of binderless boards using coconut husk and coir pith. This informative event targeted stakeholders in the coir industry, including industry experts, exporters, research scholars, and dignitaries from various fields. Held on March 12, 2019, at the NCRMI campus in Trivandrum, the seminar was inaugurated by esteemed guests: Hon'ble Minister for Finance & Coir Dr. Thomas Isaac, Sri Venugopal IAS, Secretary (Coir), and Sri Padmakumar IAS, Director of Coir Development.

- Application of Coir Geotextiles at Muthukulam Block Panchayat
The National Coir Research and Management Institute (NCRMI) actively advocated for the use of coir geotextiles by organizing informative seminars. One such event, held at Muthukulam Block Panchayat, celebrated the block's successful application of 150,000 sq. m. of coir geotextiles in various engineering projects under the NREGP scheme. This achievement earned them the distinction of being named "Coir Bhoovastra Block" by the government. In collaboration with the Coir Development Department and Mararikulam North Grama Panchayat, the National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) organized a two-day national seminar on "Uses & Established Applications of Coir Geotextiles" on February 4th and 5th, 2017. - Workshop for Senior Officials on Promoting Coir Products in Domestic Markets (May 15-16, 2023)
This workshop focused on utilizing online platforms and social media to expand domestic market reach for coir products. The training program was extended to officers handling marketing/sales/it related officials of PSU’s. The working of online selling platforms/social media etc., were discussed and the second module of the training program as suggested for interested participants.
- One-day Workshop for Officials of Directorate of Coir Development (February 27, 2022)
This workshop, held in collaboration with coir public sectors, aimed to equip officials with knowledge of coir geotextiles for direct marketing with local self-government departments (LSGD).
- Workshop on Coir Geotextile Marketing (October 7, 2021)
This workshop focused on initiating coir geotextile marketing from the base level, leveraging coir project office staff. Officers from 10 project offices participated in the workshop.
- 2nd Reorganization of Coir Sector in Kerala (April 4-5, 2018)
This workshop assessed the progress, challenges, and potential solutions related to the coir industry's reorganization movement. It encouraged self-assessment by project offices and PSU officials, and included participation from 89 key figures within the industry.
- Workshop on Restructuring of Coir Industry (November 24-26, 2017)
As a key part of the 2nd reorganization movement, this workshop addressed critical issues across various sectors, seeking solutions with participation from the then Minister for Finance and Coir Dr. T M Thomas Isaac. Discussions covered the spinning sector, cost analysis, coir cooperative restructuring, and geotextile marketing implementation.
- Research Agenda on Coir (September 29, 2008)
This workshop laid the groundwork for future research initiatives, with recommendations actively being implemented. Outcome of the workshop was submitted to Government for intervention and implementation. - Master Trainers Workshop

Training Programs
NCRMI is the nodal agency for conducting training programs for stake holders of Coir industry in Kerala. The training programs are broadly classified as Collaborated training programs, Management training programs, skilled training programs and external training programs.
Collaborated Training Programs
The National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) partnered with the International Labour Organization (ILO) to conduct the "Improve Your Business" (IYB) training program and Training of Trainers (TOT) program. Also, associated with UNIDO – KENYA for providing skill oriented training to official of Kenya. These initiatives targeted key functionaries of Coir Cooperative Societies, aiming to equip participants with essential business skills and practical management knowledge to navigate the coir industry effectively. The TOT program specifically focused on developing the management and financial skills of coir cooperative society secretaries. This enhanced their capabilities to manage these societies as successful business entities.
This collaborative project aimed to strengthen the operational and financial performance of coir cooperative societies by empowering their key personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge.
Management Training Programs
Apart from skill development training programs, NCRMI conducts management training for stake holders of Coir Department.
Management training programs highly serves to improve employee skills and knowledge and enable them to develop within the organization, which goes a long way in raising their morals and help mould their attitudes and behaviour, whereby they tend to be increasingly cooperative and loyal to the organization, they serve.
NCRMI conducts periodical training programs for updating the staff with the recent revisions/modification in the sector. NCRMI also conducts orientation programs for the new joiner’s of Coir sector.
2010
Demonstrating its commitment to professional development within the coir industry, the National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) conducted a series of training programs for Coir Department personnel in 2010. These included a management refresher program on modern techniques for senior officials, a five-day residential program focused on management skills for coir inspectors, and a program on managerial skill development for office staff, complete with a field visit to coir units. This comprehensive approach aimed to equip Coir Department staff with the necessary tools and knowledge to excel in their respective roles.

NCRMI provided training programs for Coir Department staff in 2013. Senior officials participated in a "Management refresher training for Modern Management Techniques" from October 7th to 11th, while coir inspectors (JCIs and SCIs) underwent a five-day "Managerial and Departmental Training" program from November 19th to 23rd. Both programs aimed to equip participants with relevant skills and knowledge, encompassing managerial, technical, and departmental topics. The inspector training even included a concluding industrial visit to Pollachi. These initiatives highlight NCRMI's commitment to the professional development of Coir Department personnel.

The National Coir Research & Management Institute actively fosters learning and development within the coir industry. In 2022, NCRMI organized two four-day "Orientation Training" programs for officials of the Coir Development Department. These programs included classroom sessions on management, coir products and applications, coir geotextiles, and coir scheme implementation, followed by an industrial visit to coir PSUs and cooperatives in Alappuzha. Additionally, NCRMI conducted a "Managerial and Departmental Training" program for its own staff from November 25th to 29th. This program featured sessions on new applications for coir geotextiles, untapped potential of coir pith, diversification in the coir industry, and recent R&D advancements. These initiatives highlight NCRMI's commitment to equipping both its own staff and Coir Department officials with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the evolving coir industry landscape.
Institutional Training Programs
Coir Geotextile School
NCRMI conducted nine training batches for 324 MGNREGA workers, overseers, and assistant engineers, focusing on practical implementation rather than theory. This program was conducted in association with COIRFED and targeted field-level personnel involved in projects like MGNREGS.
Training for Agricultural Department Engineers
A four-day program equipped engineers with hands-on expertise in applying coir geotextiles, including coir geocells and mulches, for use in agricultural projects.
Skilled Training Programs
The National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) has been the designated agency for skill upgradation training in Kerala's coir industry since 2003. NCRMI's comprehensive training programs, delivered through its ten project offices, specifically target women workers in co-operative societies. These programs equip workers with the necessary skills to adapt to the modernization and mechanization initiatives of the government's 2nd Reorganization Package, ensuring social protection for the traditional workforce. NCRMI's dedication to this cause is evident in the successful training of over 6,000 women, empowering them with improved job prospects, financial security, and social status.
Automatic Spinning Machine training
As part of the 2nd Reorganization Package, GoK devised a proactive strategy for mechanization of spinning process and transformed the yarn manufacturing coir co-operatives into spinning factories by operating 10/20 Automatic Spinning Machines (ASM’s) in single production unit. NCRMI being the nodal agency for conducting training programs for coir sector under GoK uplifted the women coir workers of these spinning factories engaged in ASM based yarn manufacturing.
NCRMI instilled the ASM technology to the women coir workers by engaging to a single machine by providing on-the-job-training for 30 workings days in real time manufacturing shop floor. NCRMI followed professionally framed training syllabi for diligently imparting training to women coir workers partaking with stake holders like KSCC and COIRFED to ensure coir yarn meets the industrial requirement. NCRMI has already conducted 167 batches of training covering 1640 women workers from 120 odd coir co-operative spinning factories.
E-ratt Training
Electronic ratt commonly known as “e-ratt” is one of the novel finding for the spinning sector in Coir Industry. It is a very simple instrument working on 12-40V DC motor which can be used to produce coir yarn of runnage 140-180. The production capacity of eratt is 13- 18 Kg of Coir yarn in an 8 hr Shift. The women workers of Coir industry has welcomed this equipment with extended hands as it is easy to use and can be installed anywhere and everywhere in a minimum space for working and then can be dismantled after use.
NCRMI has already conducted 54 batches of e ratt training during the period of 2018-23 for women workers of various coir cooperative societies throughout Kerala under all the 10 project offices. The eratt training attracted newer generation to Coir industry due to its ease of work and lesser drudgery and of the option of it being used at own house premises. NCRMI has trained around 1080 women workers of various Coir Cooperative Societies selected by respective coir project offices that are approved by Coir Development Department.
Extinct Varieties
NCRMI collaborated with the Kerala State Coir Corporation (KSCC) to revive production of forgotten coir products. The training program focused on creating fiber mats, mourzouk carpets, and coir fenders. Held at the KSCC premises, the program trained 214 workers from coir co-operative societies in Alappuzha. Trainees were selected from an approved list provided by the Coir Project Office, Alappuzha. This initiative aims to revitalize these traditional coir products and potentially create new economic opportunities.
Frame Mats
The National Coir Research & Management Institute offers training programs to upskill women workers in coir cooperative societies for commercially producing frame mats. These 45-day programs cover all aspects of frame mat manufacturing, including different types of mats (corridor, sinnet, round, mesh), design and color incorporation, and factory-style production practices. NCRMI collaborates with design institutes like NIFT and IFTK to develop new and attractive designs. This initiative has empowered 50 women workers through five training batches, and the program is ongoing.
Geo Textiles
NCRMI has conducted training program in production of Coir Geotextiles during the period 2004 as per the direction of Coir Department, Govt. of Kerala. The training programs were conducted for the workers of coir cooperative societies on Anugraha loom Developed by Coir Board that was installed at Coir Park, Perumon, Kollam under NCRMI. NCRMI has successfully completed the more than 10 batches of training on weaving of coir geotextiles covering 244 beneficiaries.
Master Training
The National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) actively invests in training its staff to meet the growing demand for coir processing and product training across the state. NCRMI conducts various programs, including:
Master training for new trainers (2018)
This 10-day program equipped 14 trainees (who completed a certificate course from Coir Board) with the theoretical and technical knowledge, along with management skills, to train and guide new workers in coir cooperative societies on spinning Vaikom coir using electronic ratts.
Master training program on coir yarn spinning using e-ratt (2021)
This program trained newly recruited trainers (who completed a one-year diploma course in advanced coir technology) on operating and working with electronic ratts, preparing them to train workers in coir cooperative societies.
Skill enhancement of master trainers (2022)
This program reviewed and enhanced the skills of 14 existing master trainers, evaluating their past training programs based on feedback and discussions. This information will be used to improve the effectiveness of future training curriculums.
Souvenirs & Curios
NCRMI has conducted Training program on Coir Souvenirs and Entrepreneurship program for women. The training program was held for the period of one month from 28th September to 26th October 2013. The training program was residential and international trainer Mrs. Verena Schazlein, Germany was the consultant chief trainer for the program.

NCRMI organized a two-day Summer Internship Programme for MTech Geotechnical Engineering students from the Department of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering Trivandrum. The sessions, held in two batches from May 28 to 29, 2018, and May 30 to 31, 2018, aimed to provide insights into Coir Geotextiles, featuring lectures on various topics, including an overview of Coir Geotextiles, their functions, and environmentally friendly applications. The program also included a field visit to demonstration project sites and detailed classes and demonstrations on the operation of conventional geotechnical lab equipment at NCRMI.
Moreover, NCRMI supported and guided students from diverse fields, such as Civil, Mechanical, Agriculture, Microbiology, Textile, and Management, for their graduation projects. Students from institutions like NIFT, IIT, and other reputed universities benefited from NCRMI's resources and ongoing projects.
Additionally, NCRMI arranged an industrial visit for 29 MSc Microbiology/BSc Microbiology students and five faculty members from P.G.M College, Kottayam. Application of Coir Geotextiles at Muthukulam Block Panchayat
The National Coir Research and Management Institute (NCRMI) actively advocated for the use of coir geotextiles by organizing informative seminars. One such event, held at Muthukulam Block Panchayat, celebrated the block's successful application of 150,000 sq. m. of coir geotextiles in various engineering projects under the NREGP scheme. This achievement earned them the distinction of being named "Coir Bhoovastra Block" by the government. The seminar, featuring renowned experts and attracting over 150 participants, including decision-makers and engineers from diverse government agencies and coir industry representatives, aimed to showcase the potential of coir geotextiles.
Recognizing the challenge of coir fibre scarcity
NCRMI's commitment extended beyond celebrating success stories. Recognizing the challenge of coir fiber scarcity, the institute hosted another workshop in Alleppey. This event brought together industry stakeholders, including exporters, small-scale producers, and government officials, to discuss solutions. The workshop, inaugurated by the Hon'ble Minister for Cooperation and Coir, provided a platform to evaluate imported fiber from the Philippines, facilitating valuable feedback and fostering collaboration to address the scarcity issue. Uses & Established Applications of Coir Geo-textiles
In collaboration with the Coir Development Department and Mararikulam North Grama Panchayat, the National Coir Research & Management Institute (NCRMI) organized a two-day national seminar on "Uses & Established Applications of Coir Geotextiles" on February 4th and 5th, 2017. The primary objective of the event was to delve into the practical applications of coir geotextiles and facilitate knowledge sharing among stakeholders.
Experts conducted technical sessions on the diverse applications of coir geotextiles, such as road construction, riverbank protection, and agriculture. These sessions were attended by key decision-makers, including government officials, engineers, and industry representatives. Participants had the opportunity to visit a demonstration plot showcasing the real-world applications of coir geotextiles.The second day witnessed an interactive session involving over 1200 Panchayat Raj Institution leaders, coir officials, and stakeholders. The focus was on coir geotextile technology and its potential within the MNREG Scheme.
Trade Meets
NCRMI has taken proactive steps to engage entrepreneurs and traders in the Coir industry through Trade Meets conducted at various locations nationwide, including Kolkata, West Bengal, and Pollachi, Tamil Nadu. The Trade Meets aim to stimulate interest and investment in the Coir sector by providing attendees with insights into the industry's advancements. Additionally, the institute has successfully organized Exhibitors Meets, designed to draw exhibitors and traders to participate in the prestigious Coir Kerala Expo. Inaugurated by notable figures such as Sri Padmakumar IAS and Sri C P Radhakrishnan, the Exhibitors Meets in Kolkata and Pollachi have garnered attention and participation from key stakeholders. Furthermore, Trade Meets in New Delhi and Mumbai have played a vital role in promoting industry advancements, with the active participation of eminent figures like Hon’ble Minister Adoor Prakash and Secretary Rani George IAS. Road Shows
NCRMI has organized road show at Pollachi as curtain raiser event to Coir Kerala 2015 in association with M/s Coir Board. Entrepreneurs/ policy makers/manufacturers/tradesmen from Coimbatore district actively participated in the event. Inaugurated by Secretary, Coir Board in the presence of Director of Coir Development and other eminent personalities.

Research Agenda on Coir (September 29, 2008)
This workshop laid the groundwork for future research initiatives, with recommendations actively being implemented. Outcome of the workshop was submitted to Government for intervention and implementation.
Master Trainers Workshop
This collaboration with experts from NIFT and COIRBOARD enhanced processing and dyeing aspect involved in the frame mat training program. It provided major insight to master trainers in the quality aspect involved in product development.
Workshop on Restructuring of Coir Industry (November 24-26, 2017)
As a key part of the 2nd reorganization movement, this workshop addressed critical issues across various sectors, seeking solutions with participation from the then Minister for Finance and Coir Dr. T M Thomas Isaac. Discussions covered the spinning sector, cost analysis, coir cooperative restructuring, and geotextile marketing implementation.
2nd Reorganization of Coir Sector in Kerala (April 4-5, 2018)
This workshop assessed the progress, challenges, and potential solutions related to the coir industry's reorganization movement. It encouraged self-assessment by project offices and PSU officials, and included participation from 89 key figures within the industry.
Workshop on Coir Geotextile Marketing (October 7, 2021)
This workshop focused on initiating coir geotextile marketing from the base level, leveraging coir project office staff. Officers from 10 project offices participated in the workshop.
One-day Workshop for Officials of Directorate of Coir Development (February 27, 2022)
This workshop, held in collaboration with coir public sectors, aimed to equip officials with knowledge of coir geotextiles for direct marketing with local self-government departments (LSGD).
Workshop for Senior Officials on Promoting Coir Products in Domestic Markets (May 15-16, 2023)
This workshop focused on utilizing online platforms and social media to expand domestic market reach for coir products. The training program was extended to officers handling marketing/sales/it related officials of PSU’s. The working of online selling platforms/social media etc., were discussed and the second module of the training program as suggested for interested participants.
